North Jersey Nutrition is a full-service nutrition and lifestyle counseling center. We offer a variety of nutrition-related services to help our clients achieve their goals. Our client-centred approach to counselling is what sets us apart from the rest. Helping our clients meet their wants and needs by achieving their goals is critical for both our practice and our clients' success. We take the time to recognize the breadth of information that our clients bring to the counselling relationship. This ultimately provides our expert dietitians with the opportunity to use every possible avenue to help clients achieve success.
Similar to our approach to counseling, our atmosphere is warm, caring and non-judgmental. Success is determined by the client and how they can maintain their new habits and goals, not by how fast they can achieve them. Great time is spent learning about each and every one of our clients, their lifestyle and their values. Understanding our client's lifestyle is at the core of what we do because this allows us to see things are from our client's perspective. We are successful in helping our clients reach and maintain their goals because we encourage our clients to take an active role in their own learning and behaviors. This results in nutrition and lifestyle counseling being most effective.
Lifestyle Nutritional Counseling is designed to help people make healthy changes in their diet through one-on-one nutritional counseling. This program is highly customized to the individual based on their lifestyle, goals and preferences.
It is highly encouraged that everyone starting Lifestyle Weight Management Nutritional Counseling perform a Med Gem metabolic test allowing for a more precise measurement of individual calorie needs.
Lifestyle Weight Management Counseling sessions comprise of the following sessions:
This session is devoted greatly to information gathering and lays the foundation for the subsequent sessions. You and your registered dietitian will discuss your health and diet history, purpose for seeking counseling and expectations. You will leave the session with a greater understanding of yourself and how you will achieve your goals with great motivation.
Using the Med Gem's indirect calorimetry your registered dietitian can calculate your resting metabolic rate (RMR). Your RMR is your metabolic finger-print which can then be used by your registered dietitian to counsel you nutritionally and to write your personalized weight management and meal plans tailored to your specific needs. Knowing your RMR allows you and your registered dietitian to know exactly how many calories you need to eat per day to maintain your weight and/or to get to your goals by a specific date.
The strategy education visit is 45 minutes long. During this session you and your registered dietitian will go over the meal plan or "blueprint" that was specifically formulated for you in order to reach your goals taking into account your current lifestyle as well as your health and diet history. You will leave the session with information on how to eat that supports your goal and why it is important to your success. You will also learn how to choose foods that are not included in the meal plan. At the end of the session you and your registered dietitian will discuss the length and frequency of follow-up sessions that will best suit your needs and optimize your success.
The length of the follow-up session is determined at the time the appointment is made and is between 30, 45, or 60 minutes in length. During follow-up sessions you and your registered dietitian will discuss how you have progressed since the last appointment and any questions or concerns that you may have. This depends largely on your history and personal patterns of behaviors and the goals that have been set forth. During follow-ups your registered dietitian will go obstacles that you may have faced and barriers that you foresee until the next meeting. Some topics that are to be covered include, eating at restaurants, recipe modification, behavioral modification techniques and cognitive therapy practices. There is a specific focus at each session on how to think about food more appropriately, eating mindfully and intuitively. This of goes along with how to make healthy food choices, food preparation, balancing holidays, special occasions and vacation eating with everyday lifestyle eating choices. Overall your registered dietitian and your team, although you can always depend on them, will give you the nutrition tools that will allow you to eat independently for life. Keeping in mind that the cornerstone of nutrition counseling practice is individualization, what is covered during follow-ups is up to you, the client.
